The Byzantine Icon
Icons, steeped deeply in tradition, are preserved liturgical treasures of the Orthodox Church. Since 1998, the Karyofyllis family has been pleased to supply religious retailers with both hand-crafted, and lithograph icons. All icons are hand carved. The hand-painted icons are made using traditional methods and techniques: each icon is an original work-of-art written on canvas using egg tempera paint. The canvas is then affixed to aged wood. The icon is completed with an application of gold leaf. Each hand painted icon comes with a certificate of authenticity and a seal stamped on the back of the icon.
We supply a wide range of hand carved lithograph icons in which the faces of these icons are printed on paper, mounted on wood and then varnished. We carry diptychs, (two-hinged panel doors), triptychs (three-hinged panel doors) and a wide assortment of crosses and flat finish icons similar to the R1, R2 and R3 styles. The diptychs and triptychs come in three sizes: small, medium and large. They are considered travel icons. The “G” in their code means they have a gold/metallic finish. Those without the “G” code come with a yellow/gold flat finish. Diptychs are produced two ways: with Christ on the right of Mary or on her left. When ordering diptychs and triptychs, an assortment will be shipped, unless a special request is made.
